Details for Robert Pointer
Robert Wayne Pointer, MD, flew away August 25, 2018. Thank you all for being a part of my life, and/or just reading about it, now. I was born on December 1, 1930, to my
mother, Mildred A. (Borgstrom) Pointer, my father, Clem Joseph Pointer and my only sibling, Jack Doan Pointer, in
Ladysmith, Wisconsin at 3:33AM. I grew up in
Chippewa Falls, WI, during the Great Depression, but had no idea that anyone was as poor as we supposedly were; graduating from Chippewa Falls High School in 1948 just after WWII had ended. One memorable year in the US Navy Hospital Corps was spent, in part, at the Naval Hospital, NNMC, Bethesda, MD, and then off to the
University of Wisconsin
Madison, where I finally
graduated from medical school in 1957. The following six years found us in Marshfield, WI
(internship), again at UW Madison, WI (residency) as well as Verdun, France, with the US Army, and finally in Sheboygan, WI for thirty years, in the
practice of ophthalmology.
During those memorable years, I met, and married, on December 25, 1953, in Peshtigo, WI, my true love, Carol Amy Birkett, who, with her new RN degree, not only "put me through med school", and all that followed, but blessed us with five
wonderful children, all but one, whom have survived me. Mom, Dad, brother, Jack (Shirley
survives) and youngest son,
William, have all preceded me in death. Our four remaining children continue their journey: David W. Pointer (Catherine) ret. USAF, Ironwood, MI; Daniel J. Pointer, Woodruff, WI; Carolyn Pointer Crawley
(Geoffrey, ret. USAF), Dover, DE and Robert Douglas Pointer, Maui, HI. They, in turn have blessed us with nine
grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Our retirement, since 1993 to Florida, has been blessed with numerous new dear friends, to whom, and with all others, and relatives on this beautiful planet, I reluctantly say adios. I will remember, God willing, all the beautiful things on earth, that made my life so special: among them: the
unmasking of our beautifully created body, the joy of flight with the clouds, world travels, and the second world to be
explored beneath the oceans waves; then, the joy of
Christian fellowship. For now I say again, adios, and a brief goodbye, I hope to see you all at Jesus' feet. Will you meet me there?
Services were held at Church of the Pines United Methodist Church, Minocqua, WI August 31, 2018 followed by interment at Sunset Memorial Garden in Arbor Vitae, WI.
