Details for Dorothy Hockey
Dorothy Carroll Hockey (77), of The Villages, FL, passed away on March 5, 2021. Born on September 3, 1943, Dottie, as known by her many friends, spent the majority of her life in Central and Western New York before moving to The Villages some 20 years ago with her husband Marty. Dottie and Marty quickly built a joyful life for themselves in The Villages and cherished every moment with family and friends in their new hometown.
Dottie excelled working in real estate for over four decades, but you would never know it was "work" to her if you asked Dottie's clients and co-workers. She pursued her profession with the same passion and exuberance she showed while making her famous chocolate salad dressing cake, or spending time with her many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Golf and Christmas were perhaps the only things that could rival Dottie's love for family and that cake. Oh, that cake. Dottie didn't pick up a golf club until she was in her mid 50's but her natural athleticism and contagious energy had her playing true bogey golf within 10 years. She even won The Florida Cup with her Villages teammates. And Dottie never cheated. Ever. Not even a foot wedge. She begrudgingly took "gimmes" on the putting green, but didn't need them to beat her twin sons Don and Dave, who rely heavily on gimmes AND foot wedges. Clubs suited Dottie well. She served as president of just about every club she ever joined, like The Villages Irish Club. For the Christmas holiday, Dottie and her daughter Diane started planning annually on December 26, and no one did it better than those two stocking stuffers. Their enjoyment came from spreading the Christmas spirit to others.
In the next life Dottie should change her name to Joy. Wherever Dottie went, joy followed. She could find a laugh anywhere, especially with herself. Dottie passed that precious trait, and the cake recipe, on to her children. Dottie laughed easily. Dottie did not discriminate. Dottie did not hate. Thank You Mom.
Dottie is predeceased by her husband Marty, her parents Sarah and Henry, and her older brother Jim. Dottie is survived by her daughter and two sons, brothers Paul and Hank, sister Anne, son-in-law Chris, many grandchildren, step-children, step grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
The family especially thanks Cousin Deb and Cousin Kathy, Marcia Smith, Lorraine Kenney, Ilene, Olga, and Janet from Concierge Care, Dan Pierce, many kind neighbors, as well as the staff, nurses (looking at you Chanese and Carrie) and doctors who cared for Dottie.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memoriam of Dorothy Hockey to pinkfund.org, or Cincinnati Children's Hospital Pancreas Care Center, P.O. Box 5202, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45201.
Burial and a celebration of life are planned for June 26, at 11:00 AM at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Pompey, NY, and Vesper Hills Golf Club in Tully, NY, with plans for another celebration in The Villages sometime later this year.
