It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald (Don) R. Johnson, 86, a beloved husband, father, and brother. He passed away on February 8th, 2021 in Florida.
Don leaves behind his beloved wife of 63 years, Shirley Johnson, his daughter, Lorraine Shultz, son, Richard Johnson, and three grandchildren: Marc and Matthew Shultz and Madeleine Johnson. Don also leaves behind two sisters, Carolyn Overton and Elaine Nelson. As well, he leaves behind seven nieces and one nephew.
Born in Quincy, MA, he graduated from Quincy High School. Don was a 1956 graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Don received an MBA from Northeastern University and a PhD from the University of Massachusetts.
Don was a Naval Officer from 1956 to 1958. Don briefly worked as a design engineer at Bethlehem Steel. The bulk of Don's corporate career included a variety of senior executive positions at AT&T and NYNEX.
Don considered his real career to be teaching. Throughout his life, Don taught at Wentworth, the University of Massachusetts, and Northeastern University. In the latter part of Don's career, he founded a successful management consulting business.
When Don retired, he and Shirley began a lifetime of travel. Building on Don's love of the open ocean, they took dozens of cruises, visiting 6 continents, as well as a vast number of countries and islands. Throughout his career, Don was an avid runner; in retirement, Don was dedicated to the pool, the gym, and developed a passion for golf. Don spent many happy hours playing with his wife and friends.
Don's final resting place will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
