Details for Ann Aversa

On June 2, we lost our friend Annie to kidney failure and diabetes, among other ailments. We know she is at peace, which brings us peace. To know Annie was to know love, and her loves were many: friends, aka The Misfit Toys who reflected her many interests and eccentricities; cats, her adored fur babies; road trips to Wisconsin Badger Football games and Jimmy Buffet concerts; beach vacations, especially at Provincetown; Broadway musicals and theater; food (mac n' cheese, anyone?); entertaining; and fun and gut-busting laughter.Annie loved life and taught us how to live for today. These lyrics from Rent capture her attitude toward life: "There is no future. There is no past. Thank God this moment's not the last. There is only us. There is only this. Forget regret or life is yours to miss. No other road, no other way. No day but today."Though plagued by health issues in recent years, Annie never felt sorry for herself nor would she let her friends. We stand in awe of all she overcame.Annie was born on July 21, 1958, in Sharon, Pennsylvania - the only child of Jean and Nicola. The Aversa family eventually settled in Waukesha, Wisconsin, where Annie graduated from North High School, then a new school where she helped create the school's layout, Northstars nickname, colors and logo. She earned a BS in social work from the UW-Whitewater in 1982, and a MSW from UW-Milwaukee in 1985. She went on to build a successful career in higher education, focusing on residence life and student affairs - a fierce proponent of social justice and access to education. She left an indelible mark wherever she worked: UW-Madison, Marquette, Temple, Stony Brook and Barnard. She retired to Florida in 2015.As we send Annie off to Heaven, we, her friends, want her to know that our hearts are heavy, but also filled with gratitude for choosing us to be her family. We will see you in the afterlife and expect to pick up the party right where we left off. After all, it's always 5 o'clock somewhere. You can support Annie's legacy through a donation to the University of Wisconsin-Madison; University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Stony Brook University; Barnard College; ASPCA; or Hospice of Marion County Florida.
