Officers Work Extra Shifts for the Holidays

A shoplifting suspect fled a Lady Lake officer through Kohl’s on U.S. Highway 27/441 on Saturday. Other officers cut him off and arrested him. It’s never a good time to shoplift in The Villages, but now, in a season when officers are flooding retail areas, is the worst time. Whether it’s the Sumter County Sheriff’s Operation Safe Shopper or the Lady Lake Police Department’s Operation All Out, tri-county law enforcement is taking extra steps to protect residents doing last-minute shopping or just going about their daily lives. This is the season of opportunity for criminals, Wildwood Police Lt. Russell Poitevent said. People gathering for events or large crowds at retail centers are seen as targets because they may be distracted by shopping or having fun.
