‘A perfect trip’

U.S. Navy World War II veteran Sal Gioello, of the Village of Fenney, tips his hat to the crowd early Thursday during the homecoming ceremony for Honor Flight 45 at American Legion Post 347 in Lady Lake.

“It was a very exhausting day.” World War II veteran Rocky Pyle was tired after returning to American Legion Post 347 early Thursday morning after taking part in The Villages Honor Flight Mission 45. But the reception at the post by Villagers and others who were on hand to welcome back the veterans put a smile on his face. “The applause from people makes you feel good,” Pyle said. Pyle, of Spring Hill, was one of 39 veterans who made the trip on Wednesday. Some served in World War II, others in Korea and others in Vietnam. Some served during peacetime. All looked rejuvenated from a long travel day when they got off buses and sat down amid cheers and songs from well-wishers.
