Employment growth remains hot in Sumter County, as evident from the state’s recently released October jobs report.

Year-over-year employment growth in the county remained steady at 4 percent, with 1,134 new jobs added since October a year ago.

Construction hiring for the growth in and around the villages of Fenney and Southern Oaks drives much of this increase, but Lowe’s Cos. Inc. just added a bunch of new jobs to the county’s employment roll in advance of an early first quarter opening of its new Wildwood store.

The home improvement and contractor service retailer recently hired many of the 150 jobs needed to staff the store just east of Powell Road and north of County Road 466, company spokesman Steve Salazar said.

“Growth in the area is one of the reasons we opened a store there,” he said. “The community is growing very quickly.”

Filling those jobs wasn’t too difficult, either, Salazar said. The company fielded strong candidate interest during a late October job fair at its temporary office in Wildwood.

“While the majority of positions are filled at this point, we’re always looking for top talent,” Salazar said. “We’re really excited to open the doors and start serving the community.”
