WILDWOOD - Building updates show Wildwood is a city in a state of change.

City commissioners voted on changes to the O’Dell planned development to include a permit for the developers to allow a medical facility or hospital.

“That does not mean there will be a hospital near Oxford,” said Mayor Ed Wolf. “It simply means the developer can build medical facilities or perhaps an urgent care facility.”

Development Services Director Melanie Peavy pointed out that even with changes to the development permit, any type of hospital is beyond what the city can approve. Hospitals go through an entirely different approval process on the state level.

The development is permitted for a maximum of 900 homes, 675 single-family residences in apartments or condominiums, 222,000 square feet of commercial retail and 40,000 square feet of office space on 430 acres.

The development is located on the west side of N. U.S. Highway 301 and about a quarter mile south of County Road 462E.

Peavy also brought the commission up-to-date on activity at the Trailwinds development.

Lowe’s Home Improvement recently closed on its new store project, and signs of construction is visible. The rest of the infrastructure for the Trailwinds should be completed soon, Peavy said.

The commission approved the site plan for Trailwinds Shoppes West, consisting 11,760 square feet of single-story retail.

Peavy provided the commission with an updated list of all projects and businesses under construction or in the planning stage. This was a six-month update, but commissioner Joe Elliott suggested the update be presented to the council more often, because the city is changing so quickly.

The commission approved an amendment to the budget to increase staff in several departments, buy the property for the new police department building and made the first payment on the building. The funding for these and additional projects was made possible because of increased revenues beyond what was budgeted.

In other items:

  • The commission approved donating surplus property located on Lemon Street to Helping Hands Ministry of New Covenant United Methodist Church. The ministry will place a home on the lot for an approved family.
  • Agreed to look for ways to partner with the Sumter County School Board, and a new academy at Wildwood Middle High School that focuses on landscaping and turf management.
