Lisa Parkyn knows all about growth in terms of quality of life from eight years working with The Villages Recreation Department. She witnessed a tremendous increase in the number of Villagers participating in the National Senior Games. The number this year grew to 218 participants from the 110 who participated in 2015.

What does the growth in the participation rate tell you about Villagers’ desire for the active adult lifestyle available through the Recreation Department?

Senior Games is just one avenue residents can use to fuel their active lifestyle. The Recreation Department has seen a continued increase in the number of participants in league play, open play, lessons and even socials. Not only do we recognize an increase in participation, but also there is a continued awareness of new trends toward outdoor active programming.

What does the Senior Games participation rate tell you about growth in The Villages?

Growth in The Villages appears to mirror the growth we see in the Senior Games. We continue to see overall participation increase in about one-third of the sports events we offer, and the remaining sports are consistently hitting their projections. New sports have been added to the schedule in each of the last four years. We had an all-time, overall high in first-time participants this year at 610.

What are you seeing in The Villages when it comes to local interest in Senior Games activities?

Over the last six years, there has been an upswing in Senior Games participants, during qualifying years, who make the conscious decision to compete at the Florida Senior Games. Not only do they compete, but our residents also are advancing to nationals and are continuing their personal journeys.
