Solid support emerged the past couple of years at the state and local levels in support of The Villages expansion south of State Road 44.

The then-proposed expansion even earned the endorsement of Gov. Rick Scott.

In January, Scott attended an event at The Sharon at Spanish Springs, where he spoke in favor of the plan by The Villages Developer to develop around 14,000 homes on 8,000 acres in and around the Village of Fenney and now the adjoining Village of Southern Oaks.

“If you think about it, why would anybody want to slow down the best development?” he told the Daily Sun. “I’ve had the opportunity to travel around the world, and I’ve never seen anything like The Villages.”

The community ranks not only as a top provider of a quality retirement lifestyle but also as a job creator.

“I have told so many people to move to The Villages,” he told the Daily Sun. “I always tell everybody that this is about the most wonderful place in the world to live.”

Two years earlier, Scott spoke in favor of The Villages’ continuing growth during a gathering of the community’s business owners at The Sharon. The endorsement he gave at that gathering bolstered a resolution the Sumter County Commission had adopted in its support of The Villages expansion south of State Road 44.

Commissioners view the expansion as a critical component to the county’s ongoing economic success, said Commission Chairman Doug Gilpin.

“We’ve had a long history of rock solid, common-sense development by The Villages Developer that has led to a lot of prosperity for our citizens. We’ve been able to keep services high and taxes low, primarily because of that activity,” Gilpin said.
