Saints march over Broncos

THE VILLAGES — The Saints and the Broncos were the top two teams of the last regular season in the National League West.

In the season opener, the Saints marched on for a 12-3 victory over the Broncos on Monday at Saddlebrook Softball Complex.

With the game tied 1-1, Mark Rich gave the Saints the lead, which the Saints would not surrender, with a triple in the third inning. Mariano Ramos drove in Rich with a single.

The Saints defense turned away two potential Broncos rallies with two double plays.

“The defense was really good today, which makes for a good victory,” Saints acting manager Ray Fleischer said. “The guys hit when we had to, especially to a tough team like the Broncos.”

John Hoover slammed in a run for the Saints in the fourth inning with a double, while Gene Parent sent a run in on a fielder’s choice to give the Saints a 5-1 lead.

Ramos extended the Saints’ lead to 7-1 with a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

Tom Moran started another rally for the Saints in the sixth inning with a double and scored on a single by Hoover. Parent drove in a run with a single, while Frank Fleischer sent a run in on a fly ball to left field for a sacrifice fly.

Ramos led off the seventh inning for the Saints by reaching base on an error which advanced Ramos to third base. George Rodriguez drove in Ramos with a ground-out to the shortstop. Ed Kenney gave the Saints a 12-1 lead with a single.

Sarge Means led off the seventh inning for the Broncos (0-1) with a single and later scored on an error. John Witte sent a run in with a single, while Pete Shaw flied out to the right center fielder to end the game.

Larry Reeder tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning with a single.

Colts 14, Bengals 5

The Colts scored five runs in the first inning and nine runs in the last three innings to beat the

Bengals.

Pete Shaw led the Colts (1-0) with three hits including a double and a triple. Bob Hafer, Larry Rivellese, Ken Cummings, Bernie O’Donnell and Bob Russell all had three hits.

Matt Spanier had three hits for the Bengals (0-1), while John Taranto and John Hoover each had two hits. The Bengals scored five runs in the sixth inning.

Charlie Showalter drove in the game-winning run with a single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Seahawks a victory over the 49ers.

Ray Jancso, George Silk, Dick Clapp, Dewey Peterson and Al Turello led the Seahawks (1-0) with three hits apiece.

Bud Andrews, Marty Berger and Mike Cavaluzzi paced the 49ers

victory over the Patriots.

Jerry Krebs had four hits for the Patriots (0-1) and drove in three runs. Larry Frum and Jim Einstman each had three hits.
